Apple Science: Labeling
September is apple month in Kindergarten! We have been busy in the afternoons learning about different types of apples (taste testing next week!) and labeling apple parts. Enjoy a few pictures from one of our latest projects. They are now hanging around our room making it beautiful!
We watched a short claymation clip of apple trees changing through the seasons. Click on the video below!

Plant Unit
We started our plant unit in science this week, which ties in perfectly with our reading-science integration Unit 6: Life All Around!
We have been learning about the parts of plants, their functions, the needs of plants, and how they grow. As an experiment, each student is growing his/her own lima bean plant! This is one of my favorite things every year- the kids really get into it. Enjoy our pictures and a couple of videos we've watched!

Taking data/making observations
All done and hanging! We will get these down from time to time to complete more observations.

Snow Day Fun :) Polar Bear Cam
Hello! Mrs. Coffey here writing from home. I wanted to share a link to a live web cam of the polar bears at the KC Zoo. Figured it was appropriate with our weather today!
Looking for something to do today? Read, read, read or check out some of the games under "Just for Kids." Stay warm!

Live Penguin Webcams
Today during library storytime, Mrs. Guinn read us two stories about penguins. One was fiction and the other was nonfiction. The nonfiction story was called Pierre the Penguin (which the kids all thought was hilarious with our own Pierre in our classroom!). :) It is a true story about a penguin at the California Academy of Sciences who needed a little accomodation when it came to swimming (a wetsuit!) Below is the cover of the book and the link to the webcam where you can see Pierre and his penguin friends live. Be sure to click on the button to see underwater, too.
Below is another link to see penguins that live in a much colder climate. We got to watch the penguins be fed today! So neat! Click here to see the "chillier" penguins!

Wilderness Science Center
We had a beautiful fall day for our field trip to the BV Wilderness Science Center located behind Blue River Elementary. Mr. Spake was amazing and taught us about habitats and native Kansas animals.
Going on a nature walk to see the three types of habitats we learned about: tallgrass prairie, wetlands, and the forest.
Matching pictures with Kansas animal pelts (so cool!)
Presenting animals in pairs.

Pumpkin Life Cycle
We have been learning lots about pumpkins this week! Today in our Scholastic news, we got to play a game online where we put the life cycle in order. The kids are so funny- they are now requesting that I add specific things to our site (which I love!) so here is the link to the newspaper/game: http://letsfindout.scholastic.com/issues/10_02_12/book
Below is a short video we watched to learn how pumpkins grow through the seasons, specifically the harvest schedule and how they are turned into canned pumpkins!

Story About Me game
Today in science, we continued with the five senses!
There was a fun game at the end that the kids loved to play- it makes a personalized book all about them. Here's the link if they would like to do it at home! http://letsfindout.scholastic.com/issues/09_04_12
